Welcome to Pattaya Bargain Hunter, my name is Belinda and before living in Pattaya I was a buyer in London’s West End. An important part of my job was to look out for items of quality, value and with that certain special something. Now I am look out for bargains to share with you.
AKVAVIT BAR AND GRILL
Many all-you-can-eat buffets are now increasing their prices to 395 baht but there is still one bargain buffet to be had and that is the weekend lunch time buffet available from Noon–4pm at Akvavit Bar and Grill on Jomtien Beach Road (Soi 3). The menu for this can vary every week but amongst the dishes featured are:
Swedish meatballs in cream sauce, peppered steak in wine sauce, salads such as pasta or a delicious potato salad, usually one Thai curry option, and carve yourself Honey grilled ham or roast beef.
The quality of the meat on offer is excellent and you really can go as many times as appetite or embarrassment will allow. Also buffets are great for kids as it gives them the opportunity of trying a little of each dish to see if they like it rather than waste a whole portion.
JOIN AN EXPAT CLUB
To quote American Express “Membership has its privileges” and if you take the time and trouble to join you will find that the same is true when you are a member of an Expats club. I know of two in Pattaya :
The Pattaya Expats Club – that meets every Sunday morning at The Mercure Hotel Soi 15 (just off 2nd Road)
The Pattaya City Expats Club that meets on Sunday mornings at The Tavern by The Sea – Pattaya Beach Road.
Both offer a buffet breakfast or the opportunity for you to just attend the weekly talk and members update. However of even greater interest to all bargain hunters are the many discounts available around town for restaurants or services such as medical care or insurance. Check out their websites for listings of these offers but you will see that they can mount up and all you need is to show your card in order to qualify - so give it a try and see what joining can save you.
WHEN IS A BARGAIN NOT A BARGAIN?
Whilst scouring the gondolas to see any point of sale relating to bargains it is quite easy (especially if the wording is in Thai) to get excited by a Buy 1 get 1 free offer only to find it is actually a Buy 2 get 1 free offer. What kind of useless promotion is this? Unless you have 3 members of your family who all use the same product it would be as well to weigh up the pros and cons of the Buy 2 get 1 free promotion before going for it. Do you really want to carry 3 bottles/cartons/packs? Do you want to tie up that much money on what is in effect 1 item on your shopping list? Will you in fact use all three before the expiration date? -
International brand chemists take note: this type of promotion does not have the same appeal as Buy 1 get 1 free and does not represent good value to your customers.
