Sports Preview For 2024

The sporting calendar for 2024 has a host of top events lined up but the year is dominated by two of the greatest shows that sport can provide, the European football championships and the Summer Olympics. The football is being played right across Germany from the 14th of June until the 14th of July and the Olympic games is being held in Paris from the 26th of July until the 11th of August. What a Summer of sport it promises to be in Europe for fans of live action and with a variety of other great events scheduled throughout the year, it looks like 2024 will provide top quality viewing for sports fans everywhere.

January kicks off with the Africa Cup of Nations on the 13th and the Australian open tennis on the 14th. but February is when things really get into gear with the Six Nations Rugby Union starting on the 2nd and the start of the new Formula 1 season, which comprises of 24 races, going off the grid in Bahrain on the 29th. The schedule has been altered slightly for 2024 with a view to making the logistics easier for the traveling circus and making the whole season more sustainable. Meanwhile the Six Nations first fixture is a mouthwatering clash between France and Ireland in Marseilles, with both teams having to shrug off defeat in the recent World Cup after being well fancied to win it. Fixtures will run right through until mid-March.

Other world championships being held this year include the snooker, again at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield in spite of some calls for it to be moved to a bigger and more modern venue and the world ICC T20 cricket for men, which runs throughout June at various venues in the West Indies and the USA. Of course, we still have the major yearly events to look forward to including the Champions League final, (Manchester City again?), which is being played at Wembley on June the 1st, the Copa America football, taking place at the same time as the Euros and a variety of other sporting spectacles too numerous to mention here.

Suffice to say that all the usual favorites are scheduled, the four golfing and Tennis majors, the Tour de France and my personal choice, the race meetings at Cheltenham, Aintree, Ascot and York! Whatever your choice of viewing, there’s bound to be something to whet your appetite in 2024. Let’s hope that everyone gets to enjoy it and has a safe, prosperous and sporting new year.
