Sport Update February 2026

There are some big events this month in the sporting world so although there’s a full programme of Premier League action we’ll let Arsenal wend their merry way to the title and concentrate on some of the other sports that will be taking the spotlight in February. Before we do that, and we won’t mention football again, the Champions League knockout phase starts this month with matches being played on the 17th and 18th and again the following week.

The Superbowl final takes place on the 8th of the month in California and the current favourites to contest the final are the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams but the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos and Houston Texans are still in with a shout and the final line up is not quite settled yet. The half time show is being done by Bad Bunny, a Latin American artist I believe, who racked up more streams on Spotify than any other artist on the planet last year. Donald Trump is not a fan by all accounts.

The ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup starts on the 7th and features 20 teams playing 55 matches over the following four weeks. India and Pakistan are hosting the event with the former the current favourites for the competition at around 3/1. England are third favourites behind the aforementioned India and Australia and the English supporters can only hope that they put up a better show than they did in the recent Ashes series. If the 5 day test version of the great game doesn’t suit their style of play perhaps trying to knock everything out of the park for twenty overs will suit them better. This may not appeal to the purists but it’s always great fun to watch, especially amongst the cricket mad fans in that part of the world.

Next up we have the Six Nations Rugby, which starts on Thursday the 5th with a cracking fixture, namely France v Ireland at the Stade de France. That’s followed by two more matches on the 7th and two more sets of fixtures later in the month. France are the current holders and the betting suggests that they are the strong favourites to retain the title but England are breathing down their necks and strangely enough the fixture between the two is scheduled to be the last game of the tournament in mid March. These matches are always a great watch and mean an awful lot to Rugby Union fans in the UK and Europe. It has a great tradition, with the original Four Nations first playing as far back as 1883 and it continues to be a highlight of the sporting calendar.

Last but by no means least, the Winter Olympics is taking place this month with the 116 events happening in various locations in Northern Italy. Those 116 chances to win an Olympic medal are spread over 16 different disciplines and although I am by no means a follower of these sports, I do find some of them, the downhill skiing and ski jumping for example, an exciting watch, You’ve also got the Bobsleigh events, which are always entertaining and of course the Luge, where basically some lunatics go down the side of a mountain at 70 mph on a tea tray! For anyone who likes winter sports, it’s going to be an entertaining few weeks.
