"The Skills That Exams Cannot Measure How Tara Pattana International School is preparing young people for life beyond the classroom"
Examination results are important, but what about the skills that cannot be measured by a written test? The confidence to stand in front of an audience, the resilience to overcome a setback, the creativity to solve an unfamiliar problem, or the ability to bring people together to achieve a shared goal?
At Tara Pattana International School (TPIS), these skills are an essential part of education. As a member of the International Schools Partnership (ISP), we intentionally develop the ISP Big 5 Life Competencies: Cognitive, Global, Digital, Self-Leadership and Interpersonal. Together, these encompass 15 key skills designed to help students thrive in an ever-changing world.
And some of the most memorable learning happens beyond the traditional classroom.
Confidence through creativity
Whether performing in a school production, preparing for a LAMDA examination or participating in music, our students learn far more than lines, notes and choreography. They develop confidence, communication, creativity and the ability to collaborate. Every rehearsal presents opportunities to listen, adapt, solve problems and persevere, skills that extend well beyond the stage.
Resilience through sport and adventure
Sport provides opportunities to develop self-leadership and interpersonal skills. Winning and losing, supporting teammates and responding positively to challenges all help students develop emotional awareness, resilience and teamwork.
Through outdoor education and the International Award, students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones. Planning expeditions, navigating unfamiliar environments and sharing responsibilities develop critical thinking, independence and leadership.
Leadership with purpose
Our student leadership opportunities, house activities and peer mentoring programmes encourage young people to find their voice, take responsibility and make a positive contribution to their school community. Within our multicultural environment, students also develop intercultural understanding, learning to value different perspectives and work alongside people from diverse backgrounds.
Digital skills are equally important. By using technology to research, create, communicate and collaborate, students develop the digital literacy, responsibility and innovation required to navigate an increasingly connected world.
Making learning visible
What makes the ISP Big 5 particularly valuable is that these competencies are not simply developed by chance. We intentionally create opportunities for students to practise them, reflect on their progress and recognise their achievements.
Our ambition is for every TPIS student to leave school not only with academic qualifications, but also with the confidence to explain the skills they have gained and demonstrate how they can use them.
Because education should prepare young people not just for their next examination, but for whatever comes next.”
