CONEY ISLAND A POPULAR WEEKEND NEW YORK HANGOUT

Another area of New York City that is definitely worth a visit is Coney Island. We decided to get there by using the subway. From Williamsburg, Bedford Avenue Station we took the L train to Union Square and then the N train straight to Coney Island in around 45 minutes at a cost of just $3 each. With a broad sandy beach, famous boardwalk, amusement parks and colourful history, Coney Island has its own distinct identity. I would certainly recommend going at the weekend when this iconic park is a popular seaside hangout for New Yorkers and a great place for people watching.
People watching is in fact a great thing to do here, especially if fairground rides are not your thing. On the Saturday afternoon we visited the weather was perfect, sunny with a refreshing sea breeze. We sat and enjoyed a beer at Paul’s Daughter’s Bar on the Riegelmann boardwalk, also known, simply as the Coney Island Boardwalk. It stretches for more than two miles along the shoreline, and you can see families grabbing an ice cream, enjoying the space and just taking in the fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of New York.

Coney Island actually comprises three amusement parks: Luna Park, Dreamland and Steeplechase Park. Luna Park offers a collection of roller coasters that includes the Cyclone, which opened back in 1927. One of America’s best-known wooden roller coasters, the Cyclone is an enduring Coney Island landmark. Another is the Wonder Wheel, a huge Ferris that has stood at Coney Island since the 1920s. Also, while you’re here you have to try a famous Nathan’s hot-dog. The original Nathan’s restaurant opened back in 1916 and their Fourth of July hot-dog eating contest has become an internationally recognised event. We tried the Chilli dog which I think was a bit too salty and rich – should have just gone for the classic.

Coney Island really works as both a functioning seaside resort and a living piece of New York history. With its mix of beach culture, amusement parks and colourful, souvenir stalls. It really is a fantastic place to spend some time during a New York Trip.
