A Feast with a View: The Grand BBQ Buffet at Royal Cliff Hotels Group
Regulars of the Royal Cliff, a Grand Dame of Pattaya’s premium hotels, make sure to keep a note in their calendars for The Grand BBQ Buffet. Held on the last Saturday of the month at Larn Thong & Terrace in the Royal Cliff Grand Hotel this buffet offers a divinely elegant dining experience. From its enviable location on Pratumnak Hill overlooking the Gulf of Thailand you can choose to sit inside with air conditioning or opt for a table al fresco. When we attended last month the uninterrupted sea views stretching right across to the lights on Koh Larn’s coastline were too good to miss. For sure the location is a major part of this experience. The atmosphere is further enhanced by gentle live music and attentive yet unobtrusive service. In fact, the staff were so attentive they even offered to carry our plates back to the table for us!
To start the evening, we selected a Virgin Mary mocktail. It delivered a perfect accompaniment to the buffet (even without the vodka) thanks to a well-balanced mix of fresh tomato juice, Tabasco, lime, celery salt, and pepper. Then of course it was time to stroll around the buffet and decide what to select. The sheer variety of what was on offer was extremely impressive but it was the enticing selection of sushi, sashimi, oysters and seafood that tempted me first. With everything I tried, what stood out most was the quality of the ingredients. Even seemingly simple dishes such as the coleslaw and potato salad were made special due to the use of a creamy, homemade mayonnaise. It was clear that quality had been prioritised across a menu spanning multiple cuisines. Authentic Thai dishes sat alongside Chinese favourites, Japanese specialties, next to Indian classics.
As the name suggests,
barbecue of course plays a major role in the experience. Guests can enjoy a wide range of expertly grilled meats and seafood. Aroma from these grills created such an inviting atmosphere it really encouraged us to sample a little of everything. That said, among my personal favourites was: Crispy Peking Duck, served with fresh scallions, cucumber strips, pancake patties, and a rich hoisin sauce. The made-to-order teppanyaki station was another highlight and the Wagyu striploin, so good I couldn’t resist asking for a second serving. Other standout dishes included an excellent hummus, refreshing shrimp and pomelo salad and the paneer chilli from the resort’s own famed Indian restaurant: The Maharani.
The live cooking stations were fascinating to stroll by. Watching chefs prepare and serve dishes to order added an element of theatre to the evening. They also serve to encourage guests to explore new flavours. Then for those wishing to push the boat out even further the Royal Cliff offers a premium upgrade. This includes additional luxury ingredients such as Australian Black Angus beef tenderloin, foie gras, lobster thermidor, Alaskan snow crab, and Unagi Kabayaki (grilled freshwater eel). Prepared individually and served fresh, these upgrades provide an extra level of exclusivity for special occasions.
No buffet would be complete without dessert, and the Grand BBQ Buffet certainly finishes strongly. The dessert station offers an impressive assortment of cakes, pastries, chocolates, tropical fruits, and traditional Thai sweets. Was I too full to really consider dessert? Yes! Did the encouragement of the smiling staff persuade me just to go take a look? Yes! So if was that I found myself further tempted by some deliciously creamy Vanilla ice cream served alongside Crêpe Suzette and bananas flambéed with Grand Marnier. A fitting end to an evening filled with memorable flavours.
As the Grand BBQ Buffet at Royal Cliff Grand Hotel takes place just at the end of the month, reservations are highly recommended, particularly during holiday periods and long weekends when demand is especially strong. By combining outstanding food with beautiful surroundings and first-class hospitality this dining experience successfully delivers far more than an ordinary buffet dinner. Perfect for special occasions or an evening to impress first-time visitors and returning guests alike.
