Sports Update August

It’s been a summer of great sporting action in the UK and across the world in 2025. Wimbledon tennis produced another great match between Alcaraz and Sinner after their classic encounter in Paris and this pair look like producing one of the great rivalries in men’s tennis, when it seemed impossible that the intense competition between Federer, Nadal and Djokovic would ever be repeated.
From Club World Cup Shocks to Premier League Hopes
And then we had the football Club World Cup. A hastily conceived idea that seemed to have attracted little interest and looked more like a pure money making exercise, until the final, where Chelsea put up an explosive performance against long odds on favourites PSG. Which brings us on to the big sporting deal in August, the return of the Premier League.
What that win will do for the confidence of the Chelsea team is anybody’s guess but much will depend on the form of Cole Palmer, who looked world class against PSG and seemed to strike up an immediate understanding with new signing Joao Pedro.
Manchester City looked in excellent form against Juventus in the above competition but then proceeded to get beat at long odds on against Al Hilal. Whether that is a pointer towards a continuation of the inconsistent form that City showed last year, we’ll have to wait and see, although Guardiola will be determined for that not to happen.
Arsenal will no doubt be there or thereabouts again in the coming season but their inability to actually get over the line must be of some concern. The near 200 million they have splashed out in the transfer market this close season show plenty of intent to do just that and they must be contenders. And what of Champions Liverpool? The tragedy that has befallen the Jota famiy with the death of Diogo and his brother has overshadowed the close season at the Merseyside club and I can only see this terrible incident adding extra steel to their determination to carry on where they left off last season. They will be extremely tough to beat again this year.
It would take a major leap of faith to think that any other team will show the necessary improvement to be involved in the race for the title and it surely rests between these four.
In the middle of this lowest of all low seasons, it’s good to see the big leagues back and hopefully it will bring people out again to enjoy a few cold beers in the bars throughout the city and help to alleviate a tough time for the owners.
August has three match days in the Premier League and the fixtures are out there so you can find out where your team is playing. Good luck to all and get out there and support your local hostelry.
