September 2024 Sports Update by Steve Wade
It’s a case of after the Lord Mayors show in September as far as major sporting events are concerned but there is still plenty of action to look out for, especially now that all the major football leagues are well under way. We still have the US Open tennis going on at the start of the month with the finals being played on the weekend of the 7th and 8th. And the Paralympics, now given its own schedule since London in 2012 rather than be run as a sideshow alongside the able bodied version, goes through until the same weekend.
The Rugby Championship, a competition played between the top four sides in the southern hemisphere, throws up some cracking matchups this month including South Africa v New Zealand on the 7th and the Antipodean showdown between Australia and New Zealand, with matches both home and away, are kicking off on the 21st and 28th of the month. The ever popular Formula 1 has three races scheduled, including the iconic Italian version on the 1st. The circus then travels to Azerbaijan for the 15th and then on to Singapore for the 22nd. In golf both the PGA and DP world tours are fairly quiet but there’s still top quality action to be had at the Solheim Cup, the ladies version of the Ryder Cup, which is being played from the 10th to the 15th with the USA being the home team. The ever more prominent Presidents Cup, played for by teams representing the USA and the rest of the world excluding Europe, is being played in Canada from the 24th to the 29th. And will feature plenty of the world’s top players.
The Premier League has its first international break after the 1st of the month but comes back with a bang on the 15th, when Spurs host Arsenal for the first North London derby of the season. Even better on the 22nd, when what can only be described as a clash of the big two, although LIverpool might have something to say about that, takes place when Arsenal travel to the Etihad to take on Manchester City. That’s about it for this month. There’s nothing like a couple of cold ones when you’re watching your favorite action, so why not get out and about and support our local businesses. You know it makes sense!
