Pattaya Hotels:
From Inexpensive to In-excess

by Brian S.

On my very first trip to Pattaya, some 14 years ago, I opted to stay in a budget hotel room in South Pattaya. It had a bed, a shower, a TV, and an air conditioner and charged the princely sum of 300 baht per night. Why?—because a long-time Pattaya visitor who stayed there on each and every visit to Pattaya had recommended it. After all, who returns year after year to a hotel that they don’t like? Plus, I reckoned that I would primarily only be sleeping there. I had also come to the conclusion that I really didn’t need a room with antique Thai furniture, hand-woven carpets, silk pillows, and I was entirely capable of turning down my own sheets! Upon arrival, the room was such that I deposited my bag, showered, and immediately set out to find another hotel room that wasn’t graced with the aroma of urine. I settled on a hotel whose rooms, which were priced at 700 baht, I had deemed adequate. However, I upgraded to one of that hotel’s 1,200 baht “superior” rooms on the 12th floor for no reason, other than the fact that I too found them to be “superior”.

There’s no morale to this story, other than the fact that Pattaya has an abundance of hotels in which one can take repose. If you’re not satisfied with the hotel you’ve booked, a number of better hotels await your arrival, just around the corner. One thing that any first-time visitor to Pattaya City can be sure of is that they will be confronted by hotels of every stripe and persuasion. The basics, like the bed on which you’ll slumber, and shower in which you’ll bathe, and the décor and ambience in which you’ll be surrounded, as well as the quality of service provided, the staff’s overall demeanor, and the amenities to which one might avail themselves will all vary drastically between a budget berth, a sumptuous suite, and a palatial penthouse. The size, quality, opulence, and prestige of lodgings in which you stay, is entirely up to you. However, the limit of one’s credit card and the balance in one’s bank account will likely be the deciding factor as to where one might hang his or her hat for the duration of their stay while in sunny Pattaya.

To illustrate both ends of Pattaya’s hotel price and quality spectrum, we’re going to compare three random “high-so” or five-star hotels with three random “cheap Charlie” or budget hotels to help you determine if you want to scrimp or squander your hard-earned cash on holiday accommodations. We’ll start at the bottom, with inexpensive hotels, and work our way up to the more luxurious lodgings.

Completely skipping across Pattaya’s middle-of-the-road hotels, we shall now investigate the many benefits of three of this city’s hotels that are said to be on the upside of up-scale.

Royal Cliff Beach Terrace Hotel

Occupying some 64 acres of lush tropical gardens and overlooking the turquoise sea of the Gulf of Thailand, the 89 stylish rooms and suites of the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel have been built directly into the seaside cliff face of Pratumnak Hill in South Pattaya. The list of the hotel’s amenities reads more like the businesses of a small city than a humble hotel! The impressive array at the Royal Cliff includes no less than 11 restaurants and bars, six swimming pools, two health spas, a Thai cooking school, a state-of-the-arts fitness centre, seven tennis courts, two squash courts, a four-hole putting green, two private beaches, a children’s play centre, a shopping arcade, a beauty and nail salon and even a private catamaran for charter!

In each of the air conditioned rooms and suites, you’ll find a shower and bath, a dressing gown for each guest, a hair dryer, room safe, mini bar, radio, direct dial telephone, HD TV channels, a coffee-maker and a sea-view balcony with sun beds. The cost of a one bedroom suite at the Royal Cliff is currently 4,500 baht per night.

The quality of this hotel can be confirmed by the following glowing testimonial: “We loved our stay at this resort. The place is absolutely huge. We were there for 2 nights and felt like we had barely seen half of the resort. They have so many beautiful pools that I lost count.”

Royal Wing Suites Hotel

Nestled on the tropical hillside of Pratumnak Hill, which separates Jomtien Beach from Pattaya Beach, the Royal Wing Suites Hotel offers spectacular views of the Gulf of Thailand. Like most five-star hotels, its list of amenities is very impressive. With 11 restaurants and seven bars, a wine club, a bakery and chocolate shop, a full-service beauty salon and spa, a Thai cooking school, a shopping arcade, tennis and squash courts, a pitching and putting green, fitness centre, jogging trail, sauna and steam rooms, a children’s game room, a teenager’s zone and video arcade, six swimming pools, private beaches and a complete business centre, guests can rest assured that they will not become bored.

Each of the 1,090 rooms at the Royal Wing is complete with a mini bar, bedside consoles to control lighting and in-room music, a 50-channel IPTV system, a safe and a balcony with outdoor seating. The prevailing rate for a single room at the Royal Wing Suite Hotel is currently 7,600 baht.

As noted by the following praise, you would expect nothing but compliments from the customers of a hotel of this caliber: “It exceeded our expectations. Great facilities and room. Spot-on service (even getting the little unexpected things right). Wifi literally everywhere. Can warmly recommend and would definitely go there again.”

The Hilton Pattaya

Built on top of CentralFestival, Pattaya’s newest and most stylish shopping mall, rests the Hilton Pattaya Hotel. Soaring up some 34 floors, the hotel offers a commanding view of Pattaya Bay and unparalleled vistas of the Chonburi coastline. Because of its prime location right, on the coast of Central Pattaya, guests of the hotel are just a few steps away from the sunny sands of Pattaya Beach, a state-of-the-art multiplex cinema, bowling, dozens of upscale restaurants, designer brand shopping and all of the nightlife that Pattaya is so famous for.

Some of the Hilton’s many amenities include two bars and three restaurants, babysitting services, children’s activities, a florist, currency exchange, a newsstand, a swimming pool, fitness centre, as well as a multi-lingual staff. Each guest room offers stunning ocean views from a private balcony, wireless internet access, high definition LCD TV, and a spacious en-suite bath with a separate rain shower. Remuneration for a standard room at the Hilton Pattaya is currently running at 7,800 baht per night.

One guest had this to say about the Hilton Pattaya: “Fantastic hotel, everything you would expect from one of Pattaya’s top hotels. The food is excellent and they do a great value buffet. My room was brilliant with a great view. The pool is huge, one of my best stays in the city.”
