Frugal Freddy: Just a Menuet!

Restaurants that are supporters of Frugal Freddy and PCEC give members a 20% discount on food and drink, any time you and your guests visit. When we go as a Frugal Freddy group on Mondays and Tuesdays, no membership card is needed.

This month’s new Frugal Freddy restaurant is located in Jomtien on Jomtien Beach Road just after the statues when you enter Jomtien. It is on the right side past Simon’s fish and chips and before Tequila Sunrise. The restaurant is open air (open on two sides so it has cross ventilation) and while it has a very limited menu, it is known for is its buffets.

Currently they have buffets on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tuesdays is American Picnic, featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad with all of the trimmings including chili with grated cheese and chopped onions. All you can eat for only 180 baht (show your PCEC, PEC and FTPA membership card and get 20% off of both food and drinks).

On Fridays and Saturdays it is a complete buffet and changes weekly. Some of the things I saw and tried and got favourable comments back from our members were: Pulled pork with bbq sauce, baked chicken pieces with a great gravy, making it both moist and tasty. Of course it would not be complete without your choice of rice or real mashed potatoes. I even put the creamed chicken and vegetables on my mashed potatoes and the gravy on the chicken. The meal starts with sliced fruit, tossed salad, curry chicken salad which I went to after the appetizers of cucumbers and onions in vinegar and deviled eggs. Usually the menu changes every week, which keeps people coming back to see what Dave has in store. Dave used to manage a catering company in Big Sur California and catered for as many as a thousand people in the redwood area of California.

Menuet is a Finnish owned and managed restaurant catering to the Scandinavian throngs that flock here during high season and has a great reputation as a place for them to hang out because of the buffets, the reasonable drink prices, free pool table and Karaoke in the late evening and a Finnish golf group. So if you are ever out this way or want to explore Jomtien I encourage you to stop in at the Menuet and experience some real Finnish hospitality.

The Frugal Freddy dining group meets each Monday and Tuesday, meeting times are always 6pm and are at restaurants that Hawaii Bob has determined give good value for the Baht with most of them even offering a special discount that evening. With the value of foreign currency shrinking against the baht and Thai inflation hitting us in the wallet club member seek out value dining. If you would like to get on our mailing list and join us some evening just email with “Frugal Freddy as the subject” and you will get notices where to go and make new friends, meet old friends and get reasonably priced meals. Any restaurant owner wanting us to review or visit their establishment can do the same.
