WHERE TO CELEBRATE SONGKRAN IN PATTAYA
by Kevin Cain
Pattaya LOVES to celebrate Songkran!
Pattaya likes to celebrate Songkran, No Pattaya LOVES to celebrate Songkran !
The festivities that accompany Songkran are long and varied in Pattaya. As there is no other place in the Kingdom that parties so much, and for such a long period of time as Pattaya. Sometimes the festivities are a little too much but when the big day comes around then Pattaya does it in style.
the main place to be will be Beach Road in central Pattaya.
The best day to celebrate Songkran in Pattaya this year will be on the 19th of April and although there are celebrations all over the city the main place to be will be Beach Road in central Pattaya. The whole road is cordoned off to traffic from the Dolphin roundabout to the start of Walking Street. And all along the 3km length of Beach Road are numerous events and attractions to party all day and well into the night.
I find the easiest way to survive the day and make sure you do not miss out on anything, is to start at the Dolphin Roundabout and slowly make your way down the whole length of the strip ending at Waking Street. I state slowly but you really do not have a choice in the matter as on the 19th the place will be jam packed.
Prepare yourself before you leave your dwelling, as you, your clothing, your possessions and your money will be in for a right proper drenching. Make sure you have keys, money, phone and any other valuables securely fastened in a waterproof pouch preferably hung around your neck.
Also if you are intending to stay out all day perhaps take a change of dry clothing for your journey home. And if you want to enter the fray of joining in on the water-sports, then purchase your weapon of choice and lock and load in advance. There is no right of way or anything as formal as that along the battle zone, you just have to fight your way through the aqua melee as best as you can.
The first point of call is probably Tavern by the Sea where things tend to be a little more civilised and it will ease you into the day gently. As you head towards Walking Street expect the throng to get thicker and the fun to get messier. From Tavern pass Soi 5 and 6 where there are normally parties exploding all over the place and progress on to the Hard Rock Hotel. It is here that normally the first stages, bands and live acts start appearing and all sorts of high pressure water cannons and other extreme liquid dispensing machines are menacingly pointed at the drenched crowd.
By now there is probably not one part of you that is dry
By now there is probably not one part of you that is dry, and any part of your body not covered up will be white with liquid chalk.
A new hilarious addition to the powerful water jets mounted from high platforms are bubble pits. These are areas of bubble machines pumping out soap-suds, covering people from head to foot in soapy balls of air.
Crossing Central Pattaya Road you will find the party in full swing and sound systems competing with each other playing varied types of increasingly loud music. Then up crops Central Festival and one of the biggest parties on the strip. As the courtyard in front of the mall is dedicated to one big party with a stage, live acts, dancers, DJ's and of course massive water cannons. Normally this is the place to party well into the evening - that is if you can squeeze in.
From Central Festival to the entrance of Walking Street it is a war zone of water, bubbles, chalk and alcohol.
From Central Festival to the entrance of Walking Street it is a war zone of water, bubbles, chalk and alcohol. It is reminiscent of an old zombie film with bodies lurching forward bumping into other bodies who scarcely seem to recognise the collision.
Once reaching your destination and if you are keen to party some more, then now you have an idea which part of Beach Road you want to go back to and continue your day.It is worth keeping in mind that later on in the evening things start to get a little fractious as the alcohol takes effect and some people get a little annoyed at the continuous buffeting and pies in the face. I personally opt out at this stage and cower for cover with the intention of getting some hot food inside me and drying off.
When the sun goes down and you are soaking wet then things tend to get a little too cold for my liking and I leave the partying for younger participants.
No matter how much I try to protect myself on Songkran I always end up with a heavy cold or the flu a couple of days later. Waking up the following morning I often feel like I have been into battle and my limbs ache.I can fully understand people opting out of such a crazy day and my advice is if you are not in the right frame of mind then stay away.
you will certainly have something to tell your friends back home !
But if you want to have fun and have a mad day once in a year, then Pattaya Songkran is definitely for you. But be prepared for one wild event - you will certainly have something to tell your friends back home !
